seyde: Only Hg and Py (which occasionally preserves o readings) have "spoke". While "spoke" is an attractive reading, the unanimity of all other mss with Ch El and all other o suggest that the archeype had "seyde". (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 2, 2026, 17:26)

tyme: Only Hg and Dl have "tyme" without the article. All other witnesses the articlie ("the term" Nl). Metriically, the line is possible with or without the extra syllalble (eliding "tyme of" or saying "WIlliam" as a disyllable); Chaucer regularly follows Italian hendecasyllabic verse practice with a unstrssed -e or other syllable following a stress on the tenth syllable of the line. In favour of keeping the Hg version of the line: while Chaucer elsewhere has "the" in the phrase "from the tyme" (thus, GP 44; Knight 2154) the unusual reading without "the" might easily lead scribes to supply a "the" not present in the exemplar. Hence, we take the Hg reading as difficilior lectio. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 2, 2026, 17:47)
