fressh fissh and flessh: The Hg reading with "fressh" is supported only by the ungrouped Bo1/Ph2 and by Py, which does on occasion preserve o readings. All other mss agree with Ch El in readings without "fressh". This gives easier metre, as the extra syllable may require that the final stress of the line falls on the eleventh syllable, "-vous", which does not accord with Chaucer's normal practice in the Tales. However, medial -e- in "plentevous" could be suppressed, as often in multisyllables (cf "Caunterbury") and the Hg reading may stand. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jun 29, 2026, 08:42)
