twenty: Hg has the Roman numeral XX. The expanded version, found in El, is chosen in this edition to facilitate reading. See note to GP 24.
he was of age: This phrase presents a number of variants. While Hg agrees with Ch and Ha4, El Ha3 Se and Sl2 give the order “of age, he was.” Ad1 and En3 read “of age, was” without the personal pronoun “he.” Ha2 and To1 read “of age was he.” Lc and Mg agree with Ha2 To1 but add a virgule: “of age, was he.” We take the agreement of Ch Hg, with Ha4, as decisive. in :The reading in Hg Ch Ha4 Tc1 and To1 is “in”, with El and the majority of witnesses reading “of.” We take the agreement of Hg Ch, supported by Ha4 and To1 which often retain o, as determinative. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 2, 2026, 15:02)

songes wel make and endite: Hg agrees with Ch Ha4 and Py on this reading , indicating that this is likely to be the archetypal reading. El and the majority of witnesses read “songes make and wel endite.” The non-archetypal reading has an easier rhythm to a modern ear; but it appears that Chaucer may not have preferred an easier rhythm.
