Edited text
as faste: El "as soone" is supported by just three other mss, all far from o; almost all other mss support the Ch Hg reading. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:46)
And graspeth: El and Hg, supported by just four other mss, read "graspeth" against "grasped" (40 manuscripts), Ch "gropeth" with three a manuscripts, and four with "groped". However, three of the four with El Hg are o, and the fourth, To1, often preserves o readings. Often in the Tales, scribes have difficulty with shifts from the past to the narrative present tense, and El Hg reading is likely that of o.
by the walles: Ch "by the walle" is supported by just four other mss. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:48)

this white thyng: El's "the white thyng" is supported only by Gg in o, and four other mss elsewhere. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:49)
a voluper: Ch alone omits the "a". (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:50)
drow ay: El Hg with most other mss; Ch has "drow here" is with only two other mss.
ner and ner: Ch alone reads "ner". (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:51)

That doun: El "and doun" is supported only by Gg in o, while Ch Hg are supported by all other o and cd. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:56)
greithen hem: the range of variants here shows the scribes struggling with the unfamiliar "greithen" (prepare), attested here in the present by both Hg and El, while Ch reads "ordeyned", with three a mss. There appears only one other instance of "greithe" in the Tales, in Monk's Tale 508 (B2 3784, VII 2594). See also on 393 and 394.
hir hors: Ch uniquely omits "hir". (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:59)

the: Ch has "this" here, supported by just three other mss including the two a mss Cn Ma. It is possible Ch changes to a before the end of the Reeve's Tale: see on 394. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 09:59)
ylost: both El Hg "ylost" and Ch "lost" are metrically acceptable, with the final -e in "whete" extra-metric in an eleven syllable line, as often in the Tales. However, Ch is alone among the o manuscripts here, with support only from a b. Ch is with a in Link 3 and the Cook's Tale. It is possible Ch changes to a before the end of the Reeve's Tale. which: Hg is supported here only by tw o manuscripts, the pair Ad3/Ha5, and by ungrouped Ln; Ch El and almost all other mss have swich, as do most editors. However, "which" is the more difficult reading here and gives good sense. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 10:02)

thar: the spelling "thar" is a regular spelling for the 3rd person present indicative of "thurven", related to Old English "þearf" (need), occurring five times elsewhere in Hg. El joins Hg and around half the manuscripts with "thar", while Ch a b and some cd have "dar". (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 10:03)
