seyde this Iohn: many mss including Ch Hg, a b cd and all o except El Gg, which read "seyde Iohn", with some eight other mss across the tradition. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:21)
that is: many mss including Ch Hg and all o except El Gg, which read "this is", along with Dl He Ps; cf. "for this" Ra1, "that this" Ad1 En3, "this" Nl. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:22)
I haue herd seye: the present tense in Hg is found in almost all mss outside o, and the narrative present may be preferred to the past "seyd" of Ch El. Hg is supported only by Bo2 in o, but seems likely to have preserved the reading of the archetype.
men: thus Ch Hg and many mss; only El reads "man" here (cf. "a man" Cn Ma Ps). (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:23)

make us cheere: the El Hg reading is supported by all lines of descent. Ch has "make good cheere", with the o pair Ad3/Ha5, and only Se (though Dl Fi Ma read "make us good cheere"). (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:24)

it sholde namoore: the Ch Hg reading, supported by almost all mss, requires that final -e in both "sholde" and "namoore" not be pronounced. Pronouncing both final -e gives a metrically heavy line, with "go loos" occupying the eleventh and twelfth syllables . In the Tales, a final eleventh syllable is usually an unstressed final -e or similar, and not a stressed monosyllable. The El reading "nat" avoids that. However, the weak support for El (only Gg in o), and parallel cases of suppresion of final -e in Hg suggest that we can retrain the Hg reading. with chalons: thus El Hg and all o except Ch, and many mss across the whole tradition. Ch omits "with", along with seven other mss, and none from o. The Ch reading also requires an awkward reading of "faire yspred" without elision to avoid the line being metrically light. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:26)
ten foot or twelue: Retaining Hg's "but", supported only by Ha3, and reading "owene" as a bisyllable (thus GP 213, 338 etc.) makes the Hg reading metrically heavy, with "twelue" occupying the eleventh and twelfth syllables. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:31)

speken hem: this reading of Ch Hg, all o except El Gg, cd, and of Cx2 but not Cx1 gives a metricallly heavy line, with "solace" occupying the tenth, eleventh and twelfth syllables. "speke" in El Gg (with Ha4 and Hk) with elision of "speke hem" makes the line a regular eleven syllable line with final -e in "solace". Alternatively, all a mss (except En1), b excluding Cx2 and multiple ungrouped mss read "speken", losing the "hem", so reducing the line to eleven syllables. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:35)
drynken eurere: as often elsewhere, the interchange among o mss for infinitive forms has no metrical import. The line can be read with "drynken", so Ch Hg and most o, or "drynke", so El alone. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:36)

for dronke: "because of drunkenness". Thus Link 1 12 where Hg reads "the Millere that for dronken was a pale". The final -en form is possible here too, with elision on "pale he" enabling the extra syllable "dronken and". o is split between the two forms, with Hg supported by Bo2 Gg and Ch El by Ad3/Ha5; a is also divided. Support for Ch El by cd gives "for dronken" a majority of mss across the tradition. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:38)
she: Only El Gg Hg in o have the shift of subject from "he" (John) in the previous line to the "wyf", and hence "she"; so also b ("she light was") and a few ungrouped mss. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 10, 2026, 07:40)
