Ful pryuely a fynch eek koude he pulle
And if he foond owher a good felawe

In swich caas of the Ercedeknes curs

But if a mannes soule were in his purs
For in his purs he sholde ypunysshed be
Purs is the Ercedeknes helle seyde he
But wel I woot he lyed right in dede
660
Of cursyng oghte ech gilty man drede

And therof toke the Sompnour lytyl hede
For curs wol sle right as assoillyng sauyth
And also war hym of a Significauit
In daunger hadde he at his owene gyse
The yonge gerles of the diocise
665
And knew hir conseil and was al hir reed

A gerland hadde he set vpon his heed
As greet as it were for an Ale stake
A bokeler hadde he maad hym of a cake
With hym ther rood a gentil Pardoner
670
Of Rouncyual his freend and his comper

That streight was comen fro the Court of Rome
Ful loude he soong com hyder loue to me
This Somonour baar to hym a styf burdoun
Was neuere trompe of half so greet a soun
675
This Pardoner hadde heer as yelow as wex

But smothe it heeng as dooth a stryke of flex
By ounces henge his lokkes that he hadde

excuse: only two manuscripts (Ch and Gg) agree with Hg in reading "excusen". The extra syllable causes the final beat of the line to fall on the eleventh syllable "fúlle", a practice normally avoided in the Tales. Hence, despite the usual authority of the three Ch Gg Hg, we choose the form withut the final -n. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jun 29, 2026, 08:44)
