which was first writen: The reading "was" (without "ther") is found in a relatively small number of witnesses, with Ch and Hg, together with Ha4, agreeing against the reading in El, which reads “ther was.” Many scribes appear to have found the line without "ther" metrically light, resulting in the wide range of readings here. We accept the Ch Hg reading here (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jul 2, 2026, 15:35)

Gyngle: This is the reading in Hg, shared by Ch, El and Ha4, with or without -n (without Ch Ha4 Hg; with El Gg), and so likely to be archetypal. Most witnesses read "Gynglyng." (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jun 29, 2026, 08:56)

hunters: The reading hunterys instead of hunters changes the meter of the line. Although it is possible to read the line attractively with the extra syllable, as the performance by Lina Gibbings demonstrates, the reading "hunters" found in Ch El and all other o except Gg Hg has wide support, is shorter, and is more immediate for readers today.
none: Although "none" in Ch Hg is supported by just seven other manuscripts, including Ha4 and Cn Ma from a, it is lectrio difficilior and likely to have been present in the archetype. (Barbara Bordalejo and Peter Robinson, Jun 29, 2026, 08:57)
